 Task

**Make sure you have read the introduction first!**

You will learn about investing and the Stock Market by becoming an investor. Your group will invest an imaginary $100,000 in the Stock Market Game which runs for 10 weeks.  During this time you will learn all the terminology and necessary math to participate in the stock market simulation, research companies in which to invest, and keep track of your investments with a stock portfolio.

Process & Resources

1) The class will be divided into teams of three.  As a team you will be responsible for:

2) Prior to the simulation your team of three will need to decide on and  assume the following roles. Each person needs to have a different role. However, you can decide as a team to rotate roles weekly or to hold these roles for the entire 10 weeks.  The decision is to be made by the team.

  • The Director: Coordinates the efforts of the entire team.  Supervises team activities such as helping the Treasurer with the record keeping and chart making and assisting the Economic Researcher in researching companies and bringing in current news that will effect their team's stocks.  The Director will be the official buyer and seller for the team (He/She may delegate this job to another member of the team). The Director reports daily on stock holdings and summary of accounts and gains and loses.  They will become the expert of the Stock Market Game website. The Director will report weekly on the teams stocks and overall progress to the class.

  • The Treasurer: Creates a spreadsheet in Excel that will show the weekly up and downs of each stock the team owns and reports to the class weekly on this information. Completes calculations for the stock purchase chart for each stock purchased. Provides information to the team about basic and fundamental economic data about the overall economy or relevant current events which could affect markets for products of companies whose stock the team owns or is thinking of buying.

  • The Economic Researcher: Researches market data for specific companies whose stock is owned by the team or is being considered for purchase or sell. Finds stock ticker symbols, checks stock data, including highs, lows, and closing prices. Follows and reports on current events that would effect stock holdings in companies.  Advises the team's director on when to buy and to sell. Completes the Portfolio choices report which lists the stocks that were bought and sold and the reasons behind the choices.  The Economic Researcher will present this report weekly to the class.

3) Following the 10 weeks of the Stock Market Game, your team will give a final presentation (PowerPoint, create a poster, a video, etc.) that documents all that you have learned from the simulation (your final presentation idea must be approved by the teacher). Your team will compile and submit all data sheets, charts, account summaries and transaction history print outs from the SMG website.

Conclusion

Congratulations!  I have received your stock portfolio as evidence of your participation in the Stock Market and the additional $100,000 is on its way!  I do have a couple of questions to ask of you that I wish for you to answer. First, I am wondering if you enjoyed investing in the Stock Market.  Did you find it intimidating and difficult or fun and challenging?  Second, was there any area that you felt was more difficult than another?  What could have made this experience better? Lastly, assuming that you will invest the additional $100,000, what will you do differently? What did you learn?
