INTRODUCTION

You have decided to take the Pompeii Challenge! Pompeii was destroyed many years ago, and I’d like you to re-create its history through a mosaic. This art form was originated by the Romans and continued throughout history. It is a fun way to see just how the people of Pompeii lived , worked and played. You will join a team and become either an artist, architect, reporter or one of the many everyday citizens/workers. Before rebuilding this wonderful city in mosaic form, you must first research its past. The challenge is to take what past information you have collected and create a pictorial Pompeii in collage form with mosaics from each of you. Good luck!

TASK

The goal of this quest is to research the city of Pompeii prior to and after the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. After discovering life in Pompeii before the volcano, notice the homes, artwork, gardens, baths, and city streets.  Each team will then recreate the city in a collage form using the mosaic technique. You may work on a mosaic individually to be submitted to the whole collage or work with your role members to create one mosaic piece to add to the collage.

PROCESS

  1. The class will be divided  into teams of 4 students.
  1. Each team member will visit a variety of sites available for research and find important information for his/her role and create a slide show about their information.
  1. Each team member will create an original mosaic from KidPix showing their expertise.

If you are the volcano expert, you responsible for studying and researching Mt. Vesuvius. Be prepared to discuss what happened on Aug. 24, 79 AD in Pompeii and you will be drawing a mosaic showing that terrible day.

If you are the artist, you will be learning about the ancient Roman art of mosaics and architecture styles of the day. Be prepared to discuss these art forms and recreate your favorite Roman mosaic.

If you are the entertainer you will learn how the Roman people of Pompeii entertained themselves. Be prepared to discuss gladiators, theatres, and chariot races. You will be creating a mosaic on one of these entertainment forms.

If you are the reporter, you will report on some of the little known fascinating facts about Roman life. Be prepared to discuss roman feasts, toothpaste, games and so much more!  Your mosaic will depict one of these interesting facts.

CONCLUSION

You have completed research and hopefully enjoyed learning about the ancient Roman city of  Pompeii before the terrible eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD, which destroyed an entire city. Your collective mosaic in collage form will be enjoyed by all. Art  is so important because it tells a story in a visual form about the lives of people we otherwise would never know.
